Ruthless Barcelona Thrash Real Madrid To Win Spanish Super Cup

Barcelona triumphed in a thrilling Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Real Madrid 5-2, securing a record-extending 15th title in the competition. The match, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, saw Barcelona produce a remarkable first-half performance, scoring four goals to take control before withstanding adversity in the second half.

Real Madrid got off to a dream start when French forward Kylian Mbappe broke the deadlock just five minutes into the game, finishing a dazzling solo run from the halfway line with a low strike into the far corner. The early goal seemed to suggest that Madrid could claim their third title of the season, after winning the European Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup in recent months.

However, Barcelona responded emphatically. Lamine Yamal leveled the score in the 22nd minute, firing a well-placed shot into the net after some excellent build-up play. The Catalan side continued their attacking momentum, and just 14 minutes later, they took the lead through Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Gavi by Eduardo Camavinga.

The Blaugrana were far from finished. In the 39th minute, Raphinha scored a magnificent header off a pinpoint cross from Jules Kounde, doubling Barcelona's advantage. As if that wasn't enough, Alejandro Balde added a fourth in stoppage time, following a mistake from Real Madrid during a corner kick. Yamal capitalized on the opportunity, threading a perfect pass to Raphinha, who unselfishly set up Balde for a simple finish.

At the break, Barcelona led 4-1, leaving Real Madrid stunned and reeling from a disastrous first half. Despite a promising start to the second half with Rodrygo hitting the crossbar in the 47th minute, Barcelona quickly extinguished any hopes of a Madrid comeback. Three minutes after the restart, Raphinha slalomed through the Real defense, scoring a brilliant solo goal to make it 5-1.

The match took another dramatic turn in the 56th minute when Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for a foul on Mbappe inside the penalty area. The red card reduced Barcelona to 10 men, and Real Madrid capitalized by converting the ensuing free kick. Rodrygo struck a powerful shot past substitute goalkeeper Inaki Pena, making it 5-2.

Despite playing with one fewer player, Barcelona held firm, and Real Madrid failed to register any more shots on target. In the final moments, Mbappe had a chance to pull one back, but Pena denied him with a spectacular save.

Barcelona's victory marked their first trophy in over a year, after a barren season in which they failed to secure silverware. This win not only ended their trophy drought but also prevented Real Madrid from claiming a third title in a single campaign. The triumph came just months after Barcelona secured the 2023 Spanish Super Cup, when they defeated Real Madrid in the final.

In addition to the impressive performance on the pitch, Barcelona were also forced to make adjustments due to injuries. Defender Inigo Martinez was substituted early in the first half after sustaining an injury, and Ronald Araujo came on as his replacement.

Barcelona's path to the final saw them defeat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 in the semifinals, while Real Madrid advanced after a hard-fought victory over Copa del Rey finalists, Osasuna. This victory continues the rivalry between the two Spanish giants, who have now met in the Super Cup final for the third consecutive year. Real Madrid claimed the title in 2024, while Barcelona lifted the trophy in 2023.

With the Spanish Super Cup now in their possession, Barcelona will look to build momentum ahead of their La Liga campaign, where they currently trail Real Madrid by five points after 19 games. For Madrid, this defeat marks a disappointing setback after a promising start to the season, but they remain determined to reclaim their form in the coming weeks.

The final, which was both entertaining and dramatic, showcased the intensity of Spain’s two biggest football clubs and solidified Barcelona’s reputation as one of the top teams in European football.
