Senator Kawu Sumaila (Kano South) accused colleagues of drug abuse and dealing during a debate on establishment of the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.
Sumaila claimed many lawmakers possess hard drugs in their offices and homes. He challenged colleagues to swear on the Quran and Bible that they didn't support drug abuse during election campaigns and advocated for mandatory drug tests for politicians.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin ruled Sumaila's comments out of order, citing irrelevance to the debate.
Senator Kawu Sumaila made these allegations on Tuesday during the National Assembly's plenary session.
Will these shocking allegations lead to real change in Nigeria's fight against drug abuse?
