Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has called on critics to cease their negative rhetoric and false propaganda aimed at undermining the state’s progress. Speaking during the 139th session of the state executive council meeting today at Government House in Yenagoa, Diri emphasized the significant strides his administration has made in attracting investment and fostering development.
Highlighting Bayelsa's achievements since its establishment 28 years ago, the governor asserted that despite numerous challenges, his administration is successfully reshaping the narrative around the state. He pointed to his recent recognition as a keynote speaker at an event during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, organized by the African Leadership Magazine, as evidence of the state’s growing prominence. Diri was honored with the Best Performing Governor Award, along with the Honorary Citizenship of Georgia and a Legislative Commendation from South Carolina, showcasing the recognition of his administration's efforts on a global stage.
Diri did not shy away from addressing detractors, stating, “While we are out to market our state, there are anti-development individuals locally de-marketing Bayelsa. May God touch their hearts to recognize that our efforts are being acknowledged, even if they refuse to see it.” He emphasized that the majority of Bayelsans appreciate the progress being made, urging unity among citizens for the state’s development.
The governor also reaffirmed his commitment to advancing agricultural initiatives in Bayelsa, announcing plans to provide mechanized farming equipment to enhance food security. He instructed the Commissioner for Agriculture to begin the process of recovering loans taken by individuals for farming purposes, insisting that accountability must be upheld. “That culture of taking money for agriculture and using it for something else must stop,” he stated, highlighting the need for responsible management of resources.
Diri expressed confidence in the future of agriculture in Bayelsa, announcing that tractors donated by the South Korean government are en route, alongside new rice mills set to revolutionize local farming practices. “We have brought the best hands to oversee agriculture in our state. I want our people to engage actively in commercial farming,” he encouraged.
Concluding his remarks, Diri implored his cabinet members to intensify their efforts, stressing that the success of government policies hinges on their commitment and performance. “For all of us who sincerely want the growth of Bayelsa, we must acknowledge the progress we are making. Yes, we are not where we want to be, but Bayelsa is undoubtedly developing,” he asserted.
With this resolute message, Governor Diri aims not only to quell criticism but also to inspire a collective effort towards Bayelsa's bright future.
