Alex Ikwechegh And The Audacity of The Ruling Class In Nigeria

Alex Ikwechegh and the Audacity of the Ruling Class in Nigeria

The altercation between Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, and David Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, has shed light on the audacity of Nigeria's ruling class. This incident exemplifies the disdain and disregard the ruling elite have for ordinary Nigerians who struggle daily to make ends meet outside of government.

The harsh reality of living with barefaced intimidation, harassment, and deprivation is a daily struggle for many ordinary citizens, particularly in a society clearly defined by the amount of affluence you can show off. The children of the poor also have no stake in the scheme of affairs.

Nigeria's ruling class has long been criticized for its self-serving nature, with politicians often prioritizing personal interests over the welfare of the people. The country's commonwealth, instead of benefiting the masses, has been exploited by the elite for personal enrichment. This has led to widespread poverty, inequality, and social injustice.

The ruling class's audacity is further highlighted by their lack of accountability and disregard for democratic institutions. The judiciary, meant to be an impartial umpire, has been compromised, with judges often succumbing to political pressure or bribery. This erodes trust in the system and perpetuates a culture of impunity.

The incident involving Bolt driver Abuwatseya sheds light on the glaring disparity between the rich and the poor in Nigeria. This gap is further exacerbated by the ruling class's intimidation and harassment of ordinary citizens, often going unreported. The fact that Abuwatseya 's experience was recorded and brought to attention is a rare exception, highlighting the need for greater accountability and transparency.

The lack of accountability and impunity for human rights abuses can have devastating consequences, including emboldening the perpetrators to continue committing abuses, creating a culture of impunity. It also create situation where citizens can take the law into their hands.

The failure of the justice system to provide recourse for victims erodes trust in institutions and undermines the rule of law. The accumulation of such unresolved grievances can lead to social unrest, destabilizing communities and societies.

Today, Alex is docked aside the public apology where he admitted to have acted in a manner not dignifying of the office he occupies. However, there are so many Alex in the society whose overbearing influence and intimidation of innocent citizens may not be recorded.

The Abuwatseya case has taken a shocking turn, highlighting concerns about the influence of powerful individuals on the justice system. Recently, Mr. Abuwatseya apologized to the lawmaker in a video, leaving many Nigerians stunned, especially those awaiting justice for the abused. What's more, his lawyers have withdrawn from the case, sparking speculation about potential inducement by the defendant.

This development raises questions about the fairness and integrity of the justice system. Can the wealthy and well-connected really manipulate the law to their advantage? It's a disturbing trend that undermines trust in the system and leaves vulnerable individuals without recourse.

In an ideal world, justice would be blind to social status, wealth, and influence. However, the reality is often far from this ideal. The Abuwatseya case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in achieving true justice and the need for vigilance in protecting the rights of all individuals, regardless of their background.

The ruling class enjoys maximum security and protection at the expense of many ungoverned spaces in Nigeria where there is overwhelming need for security. The number of security men on guard duty across different parts of Nigeria are outrageous.

There is need to strengthen critical institutions responsible for upholding justice and human rights to make them independent, effective, and accountable.

The Alex Ikwechegh incident is a wake-up call for Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change. This change requires a transformative shift in the country's governance, addressing deep-rooted issues like corruption, election fraud, and social inequality.
