In a groundbreaking announcement, the English Football Association (FA) revealed on Wednesday that Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as England’s new manager. The German coach, known for his tactical brilliance, has signed an 18-month contract that will extend through the 2026 World Cup, marking a new chapter for the Three Lions.
Tuchel, the third foreign manager in England's history after Sweden's Sven-Göran Eriksson and Italy's Fabio Capello, expressed his excitement about the role. “I am very proud to have been given the honor of leading the England team,” he stated. “This country has given me incredible moments, and I feel a deep personal connection to the game here. It’s a huge privilege to represent England and work with such a talented group of players.”
The FA described Tuchel as their “preferred candidate” after a comprehensive search following Gareth Southgate's departure in July. The announcement was initially set for October 8 but was postponed to minimize distractions surrounding the upcoming international camp.
Tuchel will be joined by English coach Anthony Barry as his assistant, a strategic move that blends international experience with local expertise. FA CEO Mark Bullingham expressed enthusiasm about the new leadership team, stating, “We are thrilled to have hired one of the best coaches in the world. Thomas impressed us with his vast expertise and drive, while Anthony brings top English talent and international experience.”
The FA’s commitment to securing the best possible coaching team underscores their ambition to win a major tournament, with a singular focus on the 2026 World Cup. “Thomas and his team are dedicated to giving us the best chance to succeed,” Bullingham added.
In the interim, Lee Carsley will continue to lead England for the upcoming Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland before returning to his role as Under-21 coach. This arrangement allows Tuchel to concentrate on preparing the senior squad for future challenges.
Tuchel's appointment follows a meticulous selection process that even included discussions with Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola. Although Tuchel has a storied club career with stints at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayern Munich, this will be his inaugural venture into international management.
His primary mission? To steer England to its first World Cup victory since 1966. While the Three Lions reached the finals of Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, they fell short against Italy and Spain under Southgate’s leadership.
