U.S Election 2024: Former VP Throws Weight Behind Harris

Former US Vice-President, Dick Cheney has confirmed that he will vote for the Democrats’ Kamala Harris in November’s presidential election.

Mr. Cheney, who was a significant figure during George W. Bush’s presidency, stated that Donald Trump, the current Republican candidate, “is a greater threat to our Republic than any other individual”.

Liz Cheney, his daughter who was once a Republican lawmaker, had informed an audience in Texas earlier that she was going to support the Democratic nominee.

“He [Trump] tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him,” said Mr Cheney. “He can never be trusted with power again.”

“As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our constitution,” he added. “That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice-President Kamala Harris.”

Mr. Cheney’s comments were received with satisfaction by the Harris camp.

“The vice-president is proud to have the support of Vice-President Cheney, and deeply respects his courage to put country over party,” said campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon.

Mr. Cheney is among the growing number of Republicans who have voiced concerns about Donald Trump’s candidacy.

Liz Cheney, his daughter, has already endorsed Vice-President Harris.

“Defeating Donald Trump is frankly important but there are numbers of candidates around the country who have embraced election denialism and I think it’s really important that we defeat them, too,” said Cheney

She was a member of the House select committee that was responsible for investigating the January 6 Capitol riots, and one of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach former President Trump after the incident.

Ms. Cheney lost her seat in Congress in 2022 to a candidate supported by Trump.

In her remarks, Liz Cheney also said she would endorse Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) in his Senate race against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.

Taking to social media following Mr Cheney’s statement, Trump called the former vice-president an “irrelevant RINO” – an acronym which stands for “Republican in name only”.

Mr. Cheney was also dubbed the ‘King of Endless, Nonsensical Wars’ by him, which referred to his role in the Iraq War.
