In a significant step toward local governance reform, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State officially inaugurated the newly elected local government chairmen following the successful completion of the state’s recent local elections.
The event, which took place on Sunday afternoon, saw the local government leaders take their oaths of office after receiving their certificates of return from the Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), Bala Aliyu Gusau.
The local elections, held the previous Saturday, resulted in a clean sweep for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with all chairmanship and councillorship positions going to party candidates. This outcome further solidifies the PDP’s influence in the region, but it also signals a critical phase of leadership transition at the grassroots level.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Lawal expressed his deep gratitude to the SIEC for conducting what he described as a credible, free, and fair election process. He also emphasized the importance of local government autonomy, reaffirming his administration's commitment to strengthening these local entities for more effective governance and development.
"I am a strong advocate for local government autonomy," Governor Lawal stated. "Empowering local governments is key to fostering development and ensuring that leadership is closer to the people."
Lawal, whose administration is focused on a seven-point agenda, urged the new chairmen to work collaboratively with the state government to implement these strategic priorities, which include improving infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development across Zamfara. He also encouraged the newly sworn-in leaders to stay rooted in their localities and remain in close touch with their communities to better understand and address the challenges faced by residents.
"Your presence in your communities is crucial," Lawal told the new chairmen. "Make sure you understand the issues firsthand, and work tirelessly to solve them. You are here to serve your people and bring real change to their lives."
The Governor also took the opportunity to express his appreciation for the ongoing support from the people of Zamfara, reiterating his resolve to transform the state into a prosperous and self-reliant region.
“I thank the people for their unwavering support,” he said. “Together, we are shaping a future where every Zamfara citizen can be proud of the progress we make.”
