13th National Wrestling Championship Ends In Yenagoa

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State graced the closing ceremony of the 3rd Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classics and the 13th National Wrestling Championship at the Sports Complex in Yenagoa today. The event, a major highlight for both wrestling enthusiasts and young athletes, underscored Bayelsa’s emerging role as a key player in Nigeria’s sports sector.

Governor Diri, in his address, emphasized that the Bayelsa State government is making a concerted effort to promote various sports events, seeing them as vital investments in the state’s human capital. According to the Governor, these events are more than just competitions—they are platforms for discovering and nurturing raw talent among the youth, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled athletes for the future.

“Sports is crucial for our youth to realize their potential. There’s no shortage of raw talent across Nigeria, and the only way to tap into this potential is through consistent events like this one,” Governor Diri stated. “As we celebrate today’s achievements in wrestling, we are also creating opportunities for the next generation of athletes to rise and represent Bayelsa, and indeed Nigeria, on the world stage.”

The Governor’s statement highlighted Bayelsa’s commitment to developing a broad spectrum of athletes, from wrestlers to footballers, athletes, and table tennis players. He further emphasized that while infrastructural developments like roads and schools are important, the true investment lies in the development of the state’s youth. “We may build roads and schools, but it is the people—the talent, the skills, and the dreams of our youth—that will shape the future of Bayelsa,” he added.

Governor Diri also took the opportunity to praise the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, particularly its president, Bayelsa’s own Champion Daniel Igali, who also serves as the state’s Commissioner for Sports. Igali’s leadership has been credited with strengthening Nigeria’s position in international wrestling, and Diri acknowledged the vital role the Federation plays in elevating the sport. “Under the dynamic leadership of Champion Igali, we continue to make Nigeria proud,” he said.

The event saw a gathering of distinguished dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrujakpo, Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa (represented by Rear Admiral J. U. Okeke), Comptroller-General of Customs Alhaji Adewale Adeniyi, Chairman of the National Sports Commission Mallam Shehu Dikko (represented by Mr. Olufemi Ajao), and many top government officials.
