2027 Polls: Nigerians to Take on APC -Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said the 2027 general election in Nigeria would be contested between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigerian people.

He made these remarks on Saturday during the commissioning of the Late Olusoji Adagunodo Zonal Secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Makinde emphasized that he alone would determine his next political agenda, saying, “Nobody will set an agenda for me apart from myself.”

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum; Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke; former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom; former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu; and other leaders from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Makinde called on PDP leaders to work together to revive and stabilize the country, urging them to "look inward" and collaborate. He pointed out that although there were accusations against the ruling APC for allegedly obstructing the formation of a strong opposition, the PDP’s strength ultimately lay within its control.

He said, “People have been complaining; they have been talking; they have been making a lot of speculations. Let me say this again, and I will say it myself: nobody will set an agenda for me apart from myself.

“They have also been talking, the ruling party and other parties. Let me say this: if you are accusing the ruling party of interfering with other parties to prevent them from uniting and forming a strong opposition for 2027, my position is that there are certain things within our control."

He added, “Whether Governor Adeleke and I will cooperate for the growth and benefit of our party in the South-West is beyond the ruling party.

It is between me and Governor Adeleke. So please, let us work together and unite our base; that is all we need to do.”

Makinde stressed that the 2027 election would center on the Nigerian people's voice rather than inter-party rivalry: “The next election will be APC versus Nigerians. It is not even about APC versus PDP. So, let us do our bit to unite our party and our base, and let the people of Nigeria speak.”

The Governor therefore called for unity within the PDP, saying, “We must forget the past divisions and unite for the good of our dear party. It is better for us to resolve conflicts inside Government House than outside.”

Acting National Chairman Damagum also paid tribute to the late Adagunodo, praising his kindness and contributions to the party’s success.

He emphasized that with unity, the PDP could reclaim power across the South-West and nationwide.
