Abia Assembly Slams Private Schools for Forcing Customised Textbook on Students

The Abia State House of Assembly (ABSHA) has passed a resolution directing its Education Committee to invite the Basic Education Commissioner, ASUBEB leadership, and other relevant officials to discuss the profitable sale and use of customized textbooks and exercise books in schools.

During plenary, Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa of the Abia House of Assembly announced the resolution, emphasizing the need for close scrutiny of the activities of institutions that shape future generations.

The State House of Assembly said that the prevailing trend negatively impacts both parents and society as a whole. They emphasized that the issue requires urgent attention to alleviate the burdens placed on families and ensure a more equitable educational environment for all stakeholders involved.

The Speaker announced that the Committee is required to report back to the House of Assembly within two weeks.

He stated that this timeline was established to ensure timely feedback and action regarding the ongoing concerns surrounding the use of customized textbooks and exercise books in private schools.

This resolution was prompted by a motion regarding the use of customized textbooks and exercise books in private schools in Abia State, presented by Mr. Stephen Ucheonye, the representative for Aba Central.

Through his motion, Ucheonye alleged that some school owners sell textbooks at inflated prices, making it difficult for two individuals to share one book.

During plenary, the House of Assembly also passed a resolution urging the State government, through the Health Commissioner, to prompt the Federal Government to urgently send medical doctors and relevant personnel to the Sustainable Development Multipurpose Hospital in Ugwunagbo.

The resolution followed an urgent public matter raised by Chijioke Uruakpa, the member representing Ugwunagbo State Constituency.

He also announced that this initiative seeks to tackle the health concerns of numerous patients seeking medical care at the facility.
