Otti Approves Health Insurance Scheme For Abia Workers

Abia State has officially launched its much-anticipated Health Insurance Scheme, aimed at providing accessible and affordable healthcare to its citizens, particularly civil servants.

Under the new initiative, all state workers are encouraged to enroll, ensuring that they benefit from comprehensive healthcare coverage.

The announcement was made by Mr. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Umuahia. Kanu revealed that the state government has allocated N500 million in counterpart funding for the scheme, highlighting the administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of its workforce.

Kanu mentioned that in a bid to improve the welfare of state employees and enhance access to quality healthcare, Governor Alex Otti announced the scheme’s roll-out, with the government providing substantial support to ensure a smooth transition. Civil servants will contribute 5% of their basic salary towards the scheme, but for the first three months, the state government will cover 50% of the required contribution, effectively subsidizing the cost for workers during the initial phase.

Kanu also highlighted the government’s support during this period, stating that it aims to reduce the burden on civil servants and increase participation in the health insurance scheme.

He said, the initiative is part of the state’s broader healthcare reform efforts, which also include plans for major upgrades to existing medical facilities such as the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH). By expanding health insurance coverage and improving infrastructure, he mentioned that the government aims to ensure that more Abians, including those outside the civil service, can access affordable and high-quality medical services.

In addition to the health insurance scheme, Kanu also announced a significant overhaul of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Aba. He said this upgrade is part of the administration’s larger strategy to modernize healthcare infrastructure in the state. He also added that the renovations aim to transform ABSUTH into a state-of-the-art medical facility, providing high-quality healthcare services to residents and students alike.

Recent reports show that only 5% of Nigeria’s population was enrolled in the national health insurance scheme as of 2022, underscoring the need for broader coverage and greater participation in health insurance programs across the country. This highlights the importance of Abia's efforts to expand healthcare access for all.

With a population exceeding 200 million, Nigeria is Africa's most populous country, offering a vast pool of human capital. More than one-third of this population is youthful, providing immense potential for development and growth across various sectors.
