Abia Govt, Labour Sign Agreement On New Minimum Wage

The Abia State Government has become one of the first in Nigeria to implement the N70,000 minimum wage following an agreement signed on Tuesday between the state and Organized Labour. The historic deal, sealed after intense negotiations at Government House, Umuahia, ensures that Abia workers will begin receiving the new wage starting October 2024.

Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers. “The new minimum wage becomes effective this month,” Otti declared, promising that the lowest-paid workers on Grade Level 1, Step 1 will earn N70,000. “We hope this generosity will inspire even greater productivity among our workforce.”

The governor emphasized that the payment fulfills his administration’s pledge to prioritize workers' welfare and put Abia at the forefront of progressive governance. Otti proudly noted that the state had proactively engaged labour leaders even before the Federal Government finalized the new wage discussions in July, cementing Abia’s place as a leader in labour relations.

“This isn’t just about salaries—it’s about building a workforce that will drive the economic growth of Abia,” Otti said, promising additional measures to cushion the impact of the harsh economic climate on workers and residents alike. He vowed not to make empty promises, assuring the public that every commitment would be met.

The State Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ogbonnaya Okoro, praised the agreement as a landmark moment, thanking the government for being among the first to implement the wage adjustment. Okoro applauded workers for their patience and dedication, declaring, “This is just the beginning—greater things are coming for Abia workers.”

The state’s Head of Service, Ngozi Obioma, also expressed gratitude, highlighting the motivation the new minimum wage will bring. “This move will undoubtedly boost productivity across the state,” Obioma said, pledging her support to ensure that the new policy translates into measurable results.

The agreement marks a turning point in Abia’s labour relations, with the government and workers united in their quest for progress. As the October salary payments loom, workers across the state are set to feel the impact of this bold move, cementing Abia’s reputation as a trailblazer in public sector reforms.
