New Minimum Wage: Abia NLC Threatens Strike Action

Arising from a joint meeting with the Abia State Government, the Organized Labour has threatened a strike action, if the government fails to implement the #70,000 new minimum wage.

The Organized Labour after exhaustively reviewing the activities in the new minimum wage Negotiating Committee of the state, expressed displeasure in the way and manner the government side has been handling the discussions of the new wage, even when most states of the federation have commenced payment of the new wage.

In a communique duly signed and issued by the NLC State chairman, Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya, the TUC State Chairman Comrade I.O Enogwe, the JNC State Chairman, Comrade Ekere Uwadi and their respective Secretaries, after a joint meeting of SAC and SEC of the Organized Labour in Abia State, on Saturday, frowned at the lack of transparency of the government in issuing the template with which it wants to pay the minimum wage, even when they have been in custody of the Organized Labour's proposed template for over seven days.

Consequently, the Labour Union resolved that there is no agreement between the government and the Organized Labour as a result of the none provision of payment template by the government.

Recall, that few days ago, major National Newspapers and Online Media Platforms, published that the Abia Government had agreed to commence the payment of the #70,000 new minimum wage this October.

Reacting to that publication, the Organized Labour in Abia, disclosed that whatever the State government decided to pay the workers this October would be termed as a bonus payment to cushion the effect of hardship/palliative award and not minimum wage.

The union, however, urged the government to show seriousness and commitment in the negotiation of the New National Minimum wage henceforth, as the effective date for the payment of the new wage remains July 29th,2024.

As measure to command seriousness from the government, the Labour Union further issued a seven(7) day ultimatum to the Abia Government, starting from the 26th of October,2024, to midnight of Friday,1st of November,2024, so they can conclude the negotiation of the new wage.

It further threatened that at the expiration of the seven day ultimatum by midnight of Friday, 1st of November, the Organized Labour would be forced to reactivate her earlier suspended strike action.
