Elder Abraham Amah, the recently named Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, has revealed plans to create a “Shadow Government” to enhance accountability and governance in the state.
He made the announcement on Monday at the PDP Secretariat in Umuahia, following the swearing-in of the new executive members elected during the November 3rd State Congress.
The State PDP Chairman explained that the initiative focuses on collaboration and problem-solving, with the aim of contributing positively to the state’s leadership and ensuring more effective and responsible governance for the people of Abia.
He emphasized, “the goal of the Shadow Government is not to oppose the current administration through criticism, but to foster constructive discussions and propose solutions aimed at better governance”.
He stated that the PDP’s Shadow Government will be Africa’s largest of its kind, with counterparts to all state ministries, including “shadow” commissioners and key positions.
Amah highlighted, “We recognize the challenges ahead. Soon, we will launch a groundbreaking Shadow Government, the most dynamic and innovative of its kind in Africa, designed to drive positive change and enhance governance in the region. This initiative will play a key role in shaping the future of our state”.
Elder Amah stated, “This team will replicate all current ministries, appointing officials to engage with the state government. Their role will be to ensure accountability and demand that the government provides the people of Abia State with effective and transparent leadership.”
He also revealed plans to launch the “Abia Agenda Magazine,” which will act as the party’s official platform for communication. He explained that the magazine will provide Abians with updates on state matters, while showcasing the PDP’s policy proposals and initiatives.
In a bid to revitalize the party, Elder Amah declared the dissolution of the PDP’s Elders Council. He disclosed that Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, a distinguished elder statesman, would play a key role in helping the party choose new members for the restructured council.
In his speech, Barr. Ukairo, the South-East Legal Adviser of the PDP, congratulated the leadership and emphasized the important challenges ahead. He encouraged them to put in strong efforts to reclaim leadership from the current administration in the 2027 elections.
“I commend the newly sworn-in executive for their dedication and perseverance. The task before you is significant, and I encourage everyone to give their best to ensure the PDP returns to power in Abia State,” Barr. Ukairo stated.
