Over 20 Shops Burnt , As Fire Guts Plaza in Umuahia

Goods worth of millions of naira have been burnt down, following a fire outbreak that rocked a popular shopping complex, housing over 20 shops and warehouses, situated along Owerri road, Umuahia

The Umuahia city centre was awoken by the fire incident that rocked the capital city, with goods worth billions of naira, razed down.

Shop owners who spoke with newsmen, said the fire incident started in the early hours of Sunday. One of the shop owners, Mr. Obasi who deals on electrical materials, said he was alerted about the fire and he rushed down to his shop but couldn't salvage anything. He said he lost goods worth over N10 million to the fire incident.

Mr. Obasi said, the effort of Abia state Fire Service could not really save the situation, but praised them for their bravery.

Another trader who deals on rice and other cereals said he just off-loaded his goods yesterday and said he lost over N30 million to the fire incident, even as he said, the cause was still unknown.

They called on Abia State Government to come to their rescue as the loss is unbearable and due to the harsh economic situation.
