Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emereuwa, Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, faces imminent threat of impeachment in the next sitting by fellow lawmakers.
The reasons behind the recent moves by members of the Abia State House of Assembly remain unclear.
However, reports emerging on Friday suggest tension between the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emereuwa, Governor Dr. Alex Otti, and some lawmakers.
In contrast, Lucky Johnson, the member representing Isuikwuato Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has refuted rumours claiming that Speaker Emmanuel Emereuwa is facing impeachment.
Johnson, who is also a member of the People’s Democratic Party, insisted that claims of a potential impeachment of Emereuwa, allegedly due to a clash with Governor Alex Otti, were unfounded.
The lawmaker urged Abians to ignore the misinformation and instead focus on issues that foster unity and development in the state. He also emphasized that there is a harmonious relationship between the Speaker and other members of the Assembly.
“Let it be categorically stated that there is no plan to impeach the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa,” He added.
According to our correspondent, sources indicate there is growing discord between the Speaker and the governor, with strained relationships also evident within the legislature.
While the exact cause of the conflict is still unknown, these reports point to a lack of cooperation and mutual understanding among key political figures in the state, raising questions about the stability of Emereuwa’s position as Speaker.
Reports emerged that, on Wednesday night, around 21 signatures from assembly members had been collected in support of the Speaker’s impeachment.
State lawmakers are set to meet with Governor Alex Otti on Sunday to address growing tensions within the Assembly.
The outcome of this meeting could have a major influence on the Speaker’s tenure, as the discussions aim to resolve the issues threatening the stability of his leadership position.
A critical issue among lawmakers might be about deciding who will succeed the embattled Speaker if Governor Otti approves Rt. Hon. Emereuwa’s removal.
With several potential candidates, the choice of a successor could create further divisions within the Assembly, adding to the existing tension and uncertainty surrounding the Speaker’s future.
The contenders for the position are the two Labour Party representatives from Aba Central and Umuahia East State Constituencies.
