The Abia State House of Assembly (ABSHA) has adopted a resolution urging the State government to urgently contact the Nigerian government and its relevant agencies to address the erosion gullies affecting various areas of the State.
During Plenary, The Speaker of the House, Emmanuel Emeruwa announced this in response to an urgent public matter raised by Lucky Johnson, the representative for Isuikwuato Constituency.
Johnson spoke about the collapse of the Akara-Isuikwuato road and the damage to properties in the Amaiyi area, emphasizing the serious impact on local residents. He said the road's failure has cut off access for many families, leaving them isolated from their loved ones.
He highlighted that this situation not only disrupts daily life but also poses significant challenges for emergency services and access to essential resources.
Johnson urged the government to take immediate action to repair the road and provide support to affected residents, stressing the importance of restoring connectivity and safeguarding the livelihoods of those impacted by this crisis.
He urged the government to assist his constituents by securing interventions from NEWMAP, the Ministry of Environment, and other agencies, as well as providing remediation and palliative support. He also requested corrective and aid measures, re-emphasizing the serious effect on their livelihoods.
The House also adopted a resolution instructing its health committee to summon the Commissioner for Health, the owner of City Gate Mortuary in Umuahia, and any other mortuary deemed to be adversely impacting the public, for a discussion before the House.
This action came after Ugochukwu Iheonunekwu, the representative for Isiala Ngwa North constituency, brought a matter of urgent public importance to the House regarding the ongoing nuisance along Aba Road in Umuahia.
