ABSU Prepares for More Changes After VC, Others Dismissal

Following the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor and several others, further changes are anticipated at ABSU.

This upheaval could result in revamped leadership and possible restructuring, indicating a change in the institution’s direction and management as it aims to tackle underlying issues and improve operational effectiveness.

This comes after the publication of the White Paper report from the full visitation panel to Abia State University, Uturu.

Governor Alex Otti has appointed Professor Ndukwe Okeudo as the new Vice-Chancellor, succeeding Professor Maxwell Ogbulu, who has been sacked.

He has also appointed Agwu U. Agwu as Pro-Chancellor, Mrs. Cathrine Uju Ifejika as Chancellor, and Onwubiko Dike as a member of the Governing Council. Additionally, two Deputy Vice-Chancellors, four Senate members, two congregation members, one convocation member, a representative from the Abia State Ministry of Tertiary Education, and a new Bursar have been appointed.

These appointments will take effect tomorrow, November 1, 2024.

According to a reliable source, the new management team’s appointments are seen as a crucial step towards the comprehensive reforms the State government aims to implement at the Abia university.

The source indicated that the reforms are designed to enhance the university's standing to international standards and restore its past glory and prestige.

However, the anonymous source also highlighted that, while some staff members have praised the ongoing changes, others express concerns about potential executive interference that could undermine the university's independence.

During a press conference at the Government House in Umuahia, Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, emphasized that the dismissal of the former Vice-Chancellor and other senior officials marks the beginning of a series of reforms recommended by the Visitation Panel report.

He mentioned that the visitation panel was established to evaluate the university's challenges and provide recommendations for improvement.

The Information Commissioner also emphasized that the recent appointments mark the beginning of the initial phase of reforms.

"These changes are part of a larger strategy designed to tackle the issues identified by the panel and enhance the university's overall performance. The aim is to implement effective solutions that will not only address current problems but also position the institution for future success and growth", He stated.
