Akwa Ibom PDP Suspends Campaign Over First Lady’s Death

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of the state's First Lady, Patience Eno. The devastating news has prompted the party to suspend its campaign for the upcoming local elections, slated for October 26.

According to Ini Ememobong, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mrs. Eno passed away peacefully at a hospital on September 26, 2024, surrounded by her family. The cause of her death remains undisclosed.

Edwin Ebiese, PDP spokesperson in Akwa Ibom who announced the suspension of the party’s campaign in a statement on Friday morning, expressed the party's deep sorrow, stating, "This devastating news has left our party, and indeed the entire state, in a state of mourning." He announced the suspension of campaign activities as a mark of respect for the departed First Lady.

The PDP has appealed for understanding from supporters and the public during this difficult time, extending heartfelt condolences to Governor Umo Eno, his family, and the people of Akwa Ibom State.

“As we struggle to come to terms with this immense loss, we are compelled to pause our campaign activities as a mark of respect for the departed First Lady.”

Governor Umo Eno had recently expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the PDP's primary elections in the state. However, the sudden loss of his wife has cast a pall over the party's activities.

The local elections, initially scheduled for October 5, have been postponed to October 26. The PDP had nominated 31 chairmanship and 368 councillorship candidates for the polls.

As the state mourns the loss of its First Lady, the PDP has urged its supporters to remain united and focused on the upcoming elections. The party's commitment to peaceful and democratic processes remains unwavering, despite this tragic setback.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Pastor Umo Eno, Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State and his immediate family, the government, and the people of Akwa Ibom State.

“May God grant the family of the deceased and our state the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement added.

Recall Niger Delta Connect had earlier reported the sad demise of Akwa Ibom’s first lady   Pastor Mrs. Patience Umo Eno, this morning  stating how the family requests privacy and prayers as they mourn their beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.
