Arsenal revived their Premier League title hopes with a commanding 2-0 win over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium, reducing Liverpool's lead at the top to just seven points.
The Gunners were offered a golden opportunity to close the gap after Liverpool’s dramatic 1-1 draw at Newcastle, and Mikel Arteta’s men seized it with both hands. Goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba in the second half secured the victory, keeping Arsenal firmly in the race for the crown.
United boss Ruben Amorim, who had enjoyed an unbeaten start at Old Trafford, had warned of an impending "storm" at the Emirates, and it arrived early in the second half. However, the opening 45 minutes failed to deliver any fireworks, with both teams struggling to break down their opponent’s defense.
Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli thought he had opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, but his effort was ruled out for an offside in the build-up by Kai Havertz. The first half then became a scrappy affair, with the Gunners dominating possession but failing to convert their chances.
A flurry of Arsenal corners saw Thomas Partey fail to get a clean touch on Declan Rice's delivery, while Martinelli’s fierce strike following a blocked Zinchenko shot went wide. Moments later, Arsenal appealed for a penalty when a Saka cross struck Harry Maguire on the thigh, but the referee waved it off.
Despite Arsenal’s dominance, Manchester United almost took the lead with their best opportunity of the half. Diogo Dalot’s shot across goal narrowly missed David Raya’s far post, a glaring miss that left United fans frustrated.
The second half was a different story altogether. Arsenal came out with renewed intent, and within 54 minutes, they had their breakthrough. Timber rose at the near post to meet Rice’s corner, diverting the ball past United goalkeeper Andre Onana for the opening goal.
Minutes later, Arsenal nearly doubled their advantage when Bukayo Saka's low strike forced Onana into a save, but the Gunners didn’t have to wait long for their second. In the 73rd minute, Saka delivered another pinpoint corner, this time finding Partey at the back post. Partey’s header deflected off Saliba’s shoulder and into the net, sealing a deserved 2-0 lead.
The match marked another triumph for Arsenal’s set-piece prowess, with this goal making it their 22nd from a corner since the start of last season, more than any other team in the league. Arteta and set-piece specialist Nicolas Jover embraced in celebration as United’s chances of salvaging anything from the match quickly evaporated.
United, to their credit, tried to respond. Amorim made a double substitution with Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee coming on, but it was Zirkzee’s header that nearly gifted Arsenal a third when it skimmed just past his own goal.
United did have a glimmer of hope when Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko fouled Amad Diallo, and from the resulting free kick, Matthijs De Ligt’s header seemed destined for the back of the net. But Raya produced a stunning save, stretching to his left to keep the ball out.
In the final stages, Arsenal could have added another, with Kai Havertz’s shot blocked by Onana and substitute Mikel Merino’s header from a Saka corner narrowly missing the target. However, it was all academic at that point, as the Gunners comfortably saw out the match to claim the three points.
The result handed Amorim his first defeat as United boss, and for Arsenal, it was a statement victory that bolstered their belief in a Premier League title challenge. With Liverpool’s lead now just seven points, Arteta’s side will be full of confidence as they look to close the gap even further in the coming weeks.
For United, it was a night to forget, as Amorim’s tactical decisions failed to ignite his team, leaving them with plenty to ponder ahead of their next fixture. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s march towards the top of the table continues, and with the form they’ve shown, they are set to be a serious threat for the title.
