Abia Modular Refinery Targets 2025 Operational Date

Joel Ogbonna, the State Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, has stated that a modular refinery being constructed by the private sector at the Abia Industrial Innovation Park (AIIP) in Owaza, Ukwa West Local Government Area, is expected to be completed by the end of the fourth quarter of 2025, assuming all goes according to plan.

Ogbonna, shared this information during a current affairs program titled “Update on Activities of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies,” organized by the office of the Chief Press Secretary to the Abia State Government.

He explained that the State Government created the Abia IIP to leverage the abundant oil and gas resources in the Ukwa region for industrialization, prompting Governor Otti to swiftly acquire 1,933 hectares of land in Owaza, Ukwa West, to establish a hub for modular refineries, petrochemical facilities, and fertilizer companies.

He noted that Abia has approximately 100 capped oil wells, each capable of producing one million barrels of oil per day.

He confirmed that numerous investors are exploring opportunities in Abia, aiming to establish factories at the Park.

The commissioner emphasized that, this influx of interest reflects the region's growing potential for industrial development and economic growth, attracting both local and international stakeholders eager to contribute to the area's industrial landscape.

Earlier this year, Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti stated that the modular refinery will be the park's first major industrial project, anticipated to generate over two thousand job opportunities for local youth once it becomes operational.

He also stated that the refinery would supply refined products for Abians and enhance the state's revenue base.

Otti stated that the refinery will act as a launchpad for Abia's economic revitalization, capitalizing on its strategic location, which includes proximity to Aba and Port Harcourt, abundant oil and gas deposits, a skilled labor force, and a secure environment for uninterrupted production and industrial activities.
