Arsenal’s defensive lineup has taken a hit with the news that Ben White will be sidelined for several months after undergoing knee surgery. The 27-year-old right-back has been an integral part of Arsenal’s defense over the past two seasons, but his ongoing injury issues have finally forced the club to opt for surgery.
Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed on Friday that White had been struggling with the injury for some time, and despite various treatments, it had not improved. The decision to proceed with surgery came during the recent international break. Arteta noted that the player’s condition had reached a point where further conservative treatment was no longer an option.
"Ben White is going to be out for months, unfortunately," Arteta said during his press conference ahead of Arsenal’s home match against Nottingham Forest. "It's been different types of struggles with the injury, but never the same. We had to make a decision as it wasn’t improving in the last few weeks. We know Ben will push through, but at this point, it was crucial to protect the player."
The club is optimistic, however, that White will be back before the season ends. Arteta added, "We don't expect it to be half a year, but I can't give an exact timeline yet. It’s all about how he reacts post-surgery."
The absence of White, who has started just seven league matches this season, leaves a gap in Arsenal’s defense. His form has been crucial for the team in recent years, and his loss will be felt as Arteta looks for alternatives to maintain defensive stability.
On a brighter note for the Gunners, there was positive news regarding other injured players. Both Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice returned to partial training sessions this week after pulling out of the England squad due to injuries. Arteta confirmed that both players performed well in their first training session back. "Bukayo and Declan have had their first partial sessions back today – they did very well," he said.
Riccardo Calafiori, another player recovering from injury, has also made significant progress. "Riccardo has trained well and is back with the squad," Arteta revealed, adding that the young Italian left-back would be available for selection in the upcoming matches.
Saturday's game against Nottingham Forest will mark Arteta’s 250th match in charge of Arsenal. Reflecting on his journey with the club, the 42-year-old manager shared his pride in leading the North London side. "I’ve enjoyed every minute of it because of the people I work with every day," Arteta said. "I feel incredibly lucky to be where I am. It’s all about winning and winning more, and I’m excited for what lies ahead. If it’s about energy and passion, I definitely have another 250 games in me."
