The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Says it has suspended an Officer who was caught on Video asking for monetary satisfaction ( tips) from a traveler at the airport.
The Officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II, Okpravero Ufuoma was seen engaging the unidentified traveler in a conversation, while asking if he had something for him. "So what do you have for me sir?" The officer had asked the man in the video.
The travel Control body made this known in Abuja on Thursday, August, 8, 2024 in a Statement by NIS Comptroller General, Mrs Kemi Nandap through the Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Kenneth Udo.
According to Nandap, the behaviour portrayed by the assistant superintendent which has gone viral on various social media negated the codes of conduct guiding the NIS.
The NIS Comptroller however, denounced the alleged misbehavior, buttressing that it compromised the ongoing reforms meant to improve service quality.
Nandep also emphasized that the officer had been suspended indefinitely until investigations into the matter have been concluded and the outcome executed accordingly, in line with the law and Public Service Rules.
In the statement, the comptroller narrated that the command had received a video that is currently receiving large views and reactions from social media users.
The video has the caption “ This is how immigration Officers treat tourists in Nigeria” with a display of an Officer asking a man whose face was not shown on the video for monetary gratification.
She said “This disgraceful act is not a representation of our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy.
“As a result, the officer in question has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures”.
The NIS chief also emphasized the organization's commitment to detecting and removing corrupt elements from its ranks, in accordance with its zero-tolerance for corruption policy.
While buttressing that the Immigration Service in Nigeria would further strive for excellence in service delivery, the immigration boss added that this would be in accordance with the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the Federal Government.
