Operatives of the Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested a suspect, Godgift Bai, linked to the circulation of a viral nude video of a young girl on various social media platforms.
The Command's spokesman, ASP Musa Mohammed, revealed this in a statement released to journalists at the weekend.
Mohammed said the 24-year-old suspect, Godgift Bai from Ogbolomabiri in Nembe Local Government Area of the state, was arrested in Yenagoa, the state capital, on September 3, 2024.
The statement read: “The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the viral nude video of a young girl circulating on various social media platforms.
“Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Alonyenu Idu, operatives of the Cyber Crime Unit carried out a thorough investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspect, Godgift Bai, a 24-year-old male from Ogbolomabiri in Nembe Local Government Area. He was apprehended in Yenagoa on September 3, 2024.
“The command condemns the act of cyberstalking, especially targeting vulnerable individuals, and reiterates its commitment to curbing such crimes and related offenses within the state.
“Furthermore, the command urges the public to refrain from online exploitation of individuals.
“Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be charged to court accordingly.”
It was gathered that the suspect and the victim, who is said to be 20 years old and an undergraduate, were involved in a romantic relationship before things went bad between them.
According to information available to NIGER DELTA CONNECT, the ex-girlfriend loaned the suspect N30,000 between August 9th and 16th, which he promised to refund but later refused.
She later involved the Police who called the suspect to pay the money, and after the suspect paid the money, he allegedly sent her nude videos to bloggers to circulate online.
Controversial Nigerian activist, critic and social media influencer, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, was the first person to raise the issue and vowed to ensure Bai was arrested and face the long arm of the law.
He described the suspect as "a demon in human form" for blackmailing the victim who rendered help to him when he needed it and vowed that he would do everything within his power to ensure that Bai is sent to jail for the heinous crime.
VeryDarkMan blamed the blog for posting the nude video of the victim, noting that the situation could have led to her death because of the trauma that comes with it.
