Bayelsa Shines At World Schools Athletics Trials

The Bayelsa State contingent to the on-going World Schools Athletics Trials (WSAT), have finished tops with a total of five gold and 4 silver medals.

The sports event which took place at Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, hosts various secondary schools across the nation for trials in preparation for the World Athletes Championship.

The event is organized by the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF), with the aim of selecting student athletes that will represent the country at the 20th Gymnasiade in Bahrain later this year.

Team Bayelsa, who have again shown that they are champions of school sports in Nigeria, will be raising the Nigeria flag high this year, upon their excellent performance at the trials.

Reports gathered shows that Bayelsa State won its first gold medal in the long jump event for boys Under-18, coming from students of Community Secondary School, Aleibiri in Ekeremor Local Government Area, who attained an impressive distance of 7.38 meters to finish first ahead of Lagos and other states.

Team Bayelsa also engaged in other sporting events, where Gagede Tamaramiebi, who qualified for the finals in the girls category of Under-15, and Faye Perfect, who qualified with the best time in the heats for the boys Under-1m5 category. Sigah Perezide won silver in both the 100 and 200m U-18 girls.

Some of the students selected to represent Nigeria at the ISF GYMNASIADE in the Kingdom of Bahrain from October 23 to 31, 2024 include

David Michael, who won silver in the boys U-18 100m with a time of 11:04m, Faye Perfect who won silver in the 100m event with a time of 11:50 and Sigah Perezide, who won silver in both the 100 and 200m U-18 girls.

This is a good feat achieved again by Team Bayelsa, tracing back to previous performances in schools sport which they qualified for, at the previous competition where they represented Nigeria in China.

Coach Richard Torugbene and Godwin Adagbo, who is the Coordinator of the Nigeria Schools Sport Federation (NSF) expressed gratitude to the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, the Commissioner for Education, Bayelsa State, Dr Gentle Emelah, and the DG New Media and Vice Chairman Bayelsa Athletics Association, Dr. Kola Oredipe for making it possible for the Bayelsa Athletes to participate in the trials.
