Blues Winning Streak Continues With 2-1 Win Over Brentford

Chelsea extended their impressive winning streak in the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford, moving within two points of leaders Liverpool and keeping their unlikely title challenge alive under Enzo Maresca. The Blues have now won four consecutive league matches, and despite a few tense moments, their solid performance at Stamford Bridge ensured they maintained momentum at the top of the table.

Coming into the match, Chelsea were determined to break their disappointing run against Brentford at home, having lost the last three encounters at Stamford Bridge. With the title race heating up, Maresca’s side knew that a win was essential to stay within touching distance of Liverpool, who sit at the top of the Premier League. The Blues started the match on the front foot, with Nicolas Jackson coming close to opening the scoring with a header that narrowly went over the bar. Cole Palmer also tested Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken with a powerful shot, but the German shot-stopper was equal to the task. Chelsea dominated possession and had the better of the early exchanges, but they were forced to rely on Levi Colwill’s defensive intervention when he blocked a dangerous effort from Mikkel Damsgaard, which could have put Brentford ahead.

Chelsea’s persistence paid off just before the break, as they broke the deadlock with their 21st cross of the match. Marc Cucurella, who had never scored in the Premier League for Chelsea, made a well-timed run into the box to meet Noni Madueke’s perfect delivery. With a diving header, Cucurella ended his goal drought in spectacular fashion, putting Chelsea in front just two minutes before halftime.

In the second half, Chelsea continued to pile pressure on the visitors. Jadon Sancho created a great chance for Jackson on the hour mark, but the forward misjudged his shot, sending the ball high over the bar when he should have scored. Despite the miss, Chelsea’s attacking intent never wavered.

Brentford threatened sporadically, but Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sánchez was called into action, making a remarkable one-handed save to deny Christian Nørgaard’s volley. Then, Fábio Carvalho’s close-range shot rattled the crossbar, adding to the visitors’ frustration. But Chelsea eventually sealed the game with a brilliant counter-attack. Jackson, who had earlier squandered a golden opportunity, made amends when he clinically finished at the near post after a rapid breakaway.

Although Bryan Mbuemo pulled one back for Brentford in injury time, it was too little, too late. His goal in the 90th minute was merely a consolation, as Chelsea held on to secure all three points.

The victory, however, was marred by an unsavory incident after the final whistle, as Cucurella was shown a red card, adding a sour note to an otherwise solid performance. Nevertheless, Chelsea now have the chance to temporarily top the Premier League table, with Liverpool's next match being crucial to their hopes of finishing in first place.

Brentford, meanwhile, remain without an away win this season, with a record of one draw and seven losses on the road. Their strong home form continues to be their saving grace, but their struggles on the road will need to improve if they are to avoid a relegation battle.
