Maresca Eyes Improvement As Chelsea Moves For Top Spot

Chelsea's impressive form this season has certainly placed them among the Premier League's top contenders, yet manager Enzo Maresca remains cautious about labeling his team as serious title challengers. Despite a thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, a win that extended their unbeaten run to four consecutive matches, Maresca insists his squad isn't caught up in the hype of the title race—at least not yet.

Chelsea's comeback against Spurs, where they overturned a two-goal deficit to claim all three points, lifted them to second in the table with 31 points from 15 games, just four behind league leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand. With Arsenal trailing by two points in third and reigning champions Manchester City four points adrift in fourth, Chelsea is firmly in the mix at the top.

However, Maresca, who took the helm in June after a successful stint guiding Leicester City to the Championship title, remains firmly grounded. When asked about Chelsea's position in the title race, he responded with characteristic pragmatism.

"You can sense the excitement around the title race, but we don’t feel it within the team just yet," Maresca said. "Right now, we’re focused on the present, on improving every day. It’s too early to start thinking about months ahead. If you begin to look too far into the future, that’s when things can go wrong."

The Italian manager is emphasizing a day-by-day mentality, urging his players to remain focused on each match, avoiding the distractions of distant goals. Despite their strong position, Maresca's approach is to take it one game at a time—remaining cautious about getting too far ahead of themselves.

Chelsea’s next challenge comes this Sunday when they host Brentford at Stamford Bridge. The Bees have been woeful on their travels this season, managing just one point from seven away games. While this might seem like a favorable match-up for Chelsea, the West London side has struggled against Brentford in recent encounters. In fact, Chelsea is winless in their last five league meetings with the Bees, a fact that Maresca acknowledged in his pre-match comments.

"Brentford is a tricky team to play against," Maresca said. "They have the ability to switch tactics mid-game—they can play with a back four or a back five, and sometimes they even shift one of their wingers to make it more unpredictable. We must be ready for all their variations."

Despite their recent struggles against Brentford, Chelsea remains confident, bolstered by the resurgence of Jadon Sancho. The winger has found his scoring touch, netting in consecutive league games. Maresca praised Sancho’s improvement in front of goal, especially his newfound ability to take chances when they arise.

"Jadon has been excellent," Maresca noted. "Earlier in the season, he was always looking to provide assists, and while that’s a great quality, sometimes you have to take the shot yourself. He’s been much more decisive lately, and that’s exactly what we need from him."

As Chelsea prepares for what looks like a must-win match against Brentford, Maresca's focus on continuous improvement and not getting ahead of themselves will be crucial if they are to maintain their momentum in the race for the Premier League title. With the squad showing signs of developing into a well-rounded, resilient unit, Chelsea's aspirations may yet grow as the season progresses. For now, however, Maresca's measured approach ensures the team remains firmly grounded.
