Body of Missing Passenger Recovered in Lobia Boat Accident

The body of one Felix from the Eastern part of the country has been found following a tragic boat mishap that claimed his life in Bayelsa.

Report indicates that on Saturday afternoon last week, a speedboat with 15 passengers onboard while returning to Yenagoa from the burial of the late Surveyor General of Nigeria (rtrd) Surveyor Ebisintei Awudu from Lobia 2 Community in Southern Ijaw LGA capsized along Ukubie axis. Rescue efforts were seemingly successful but one body was found missing.

The Chairman, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Bayelsa State Chapter, Ipigansi Ogoniba, who confirmed the death of the young man noted that it is not clear what caused the accident. Although preliminary investigations revealed that the driver ran into a heavy wood that was not visible to the water surface.

He noted that the deceased was an instrumentalist who went to play at the burial, adding that the State government had insisted on passengers wearing life jackets before travelling on the sea.

Ogoniba said, “While concerned citizens rescued the other passengers from the community, one person drowned due to the rising water level in the area.”

The speedboat carrying 15 passengers capsized on Saturday at the Ukubie community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government of the state.

'It is not clear what caused the accident, Ogoniba. Bayelsa State Government had announced some safety measures following the tragic fire that engulfed the wooden boat which sank killing 20 persons'

The measures include a ban on cooking in wooden boats, the prohibition of carrying more than the petrol needed for the journey, and the wearing of lifejackets.

Earlier this month about 20 persons lost their lives when the engine of a wooden boat popularly known as ‘Denghe’ exploded in the middle of the river and sank in Ezetu I community river in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the Bayelsa State.

The ill-fated boat conveying traders mostly women and their merchandise was said to have left the Ezetu I community on the Atlantic fringe around 3 pm on the fateful day and sailing to Swali in Yenagoa, when its engine exploded, caught fire and sank in the middle of the river.
