The Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, has expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Nigerian football stars following their impressive recognition at the 2024 African Football Awards. He particularly lauded Ademola Lookman, the Super Eagles forward, who was named the 2024 African Footballer of the Year, a highly coveted accolade in African football.
Lookman, who currently plays for Atalanta in Italy, emerged victorious in the face of tough competition, surpassing notable nominees such as Achraf Hakimi of Morocco, Simon Adingra of the Ivory Coast, and Serhou Guirassy of Guinea. His remarkable performances at both club and international levels earned him the prestigious title, further elevating Nigeria’s status as a football powerhouse on the continent.
In addition to Lookman’s triumph, the award ceremony also saw other Nigerians earning well-deserved accolades. Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, was named the Best Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year. Meanwhile, the Nigerian women's national football team, the Super Falcons, claimed the Women’s Team of the Year award. These victories highlighted Nigeria’s dominance and influence in African football across both men's and women's categories.
Honourable Amadu, who represents the Gusau/Tsafe Federal constituency in the House of Representatives, emphasized the significance of these awards, particularly Lookman’s achievement. He described it as a reflection of Lookman’s dedication, hard work, and the indomitable spirit of Nigerian footballers. “Ademola Lookman’s victory is a testament to his relentless efforts, consistency, and the true Nigerian spirit of resilience. His achievement not only makes us proud but also reinforces Nigeria’s position as a leading talent factory in African football,” Honourable Amadu remarked.
The chairman further expressed optimism that Lookman’s success would inspire the national team, especially as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. “Lookman’s award is a catalyst for renewed hope in our footballing future. It serves as motivation for the Super Eagles to step up their efforts and I believe they have everything it takes to get back on track for the 2026 World Cup,” he said confidently.
Turning his attention to the Super Falcons, Amadu reassured the football community that the House Committee on Sports would continue to support the growth of women’s football in Nigeria. “The Super Falcons have consistently proven their superiority on the continental stage, and we, at the House Committee on Sports, are committed to providing the necessary support to the Nigeria Football Federation to ensure that Nigeria retains its rightful place at the top of African women’s football,” Amadu concluded.
These victories are not just a testament to the individual talents of Lookman, Nnadozie, and the Super Falcons, but also to the continued rise of Nigerian football as a global force, one that continues to inspire both the present and future generations of athletes.
