President Bola Tinubu has confirmed the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, who died on Tuesday night in Lagos at the age of 56 after a period of illness. The announcement, made by the Presidency through a statement from Bayo Onanuga, has left the nation in mourning as it remembers the life and legacy of one of its most distinguished military leaders.
Lt. General Lagbaja, who was appointed by President Tinubu as Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, had a remarkable career that spanned over three decades in the Nigerian Army. Born on February 28, 1968, Lagbaja's journey in the military began when he enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. By September 19, 1992, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps as part of the 39th Regular Course, beginning his rise through the ranks with dedication and distinction.
Throughout his career, Lagbaja showcased outstanding leadership, notably serving as a platoon commander in key battalions such as the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion. His contributions were instrumental in some of the most significant military operations in recent Nigerian history, including Operation Zaki in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity in the volatile regions of Kaduna and Niger States.
A scholar as well as a soldier, Lt. General Lagbaja earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the prestigious U.S. Army War College, further cementing his reputation as a well-rounded military leader committed to continuous professional development.
President Tinubu, in his tribute, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of a dedicated officer and extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of Lt. General Lagbaja, his comrades in arms, and the Nigerian Armed Forces. "His legacy of service and leadership will forever remain a beacon for our military," the President said.
