President Joe Biden Shocks Nation, Drops Out of Presidential Race.
In a stunning move, US President Joe Biden announced today that he is ending his campaign for re-election to the White House, citing the need to put the interests of his party and the country first.
Biden's decision comes after weeks of mounting pressure from within his own party, following a lackluster debate performance against rival Donald Trump in late June. Despite his efforts to regain momentum, the President has faced growing calls to step aside and allow a new candidate to take the reins.
In a statement, Biden said it had been the "greatest honor of his life" to serve as President, but acknowledged that his continued candidacy would only serve to divide the party. He endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for president, saying she was the best person to lead the party to victory in November.
However, not everyone is pleased with Biden's decision to see out the remainder of his term. Political opponents, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, have called for him to step down immediately, while rival Donald Trump claimed Biden is "not fit to serve".
Despite the criticism, Biden has received an outpouring of support.
