Cholera Crisis in Sudan: Over 430 Dead as Civil War Rages On

Sudan's health ministry has reported a dire cholera outbreak, with over 430 fatalities in the past month alone, as the ongoing civil war exacerbates the crisis. Health Minister Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim disclosed that infections have surged to approximately 14,000, prompting urgent efforts to combat the disease in the most affected states.

The outbreak was officially declared in mid-August, coinciding with a devastating conflict that has claimed up to 150,000 lives since its inception last year. U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, highlighted the difficulties in delivering medical aid to affected areas, where health workers face regular obstruction from both warring factions.

Cholera, a fast-acting and highly contagious disease, can lead to severe diarrhea and dehydration, with rapid treatment being essential for survival. While it is relatively easy to treat, the ongoing war, compounded by heavy rainfall and flooding, has created a "perfect storm" for the disease's spread, according to Esperanza Santos, MSF emergency coordinator for Sudan.

In response to the outbreak, schools, markets, and stores in some areas have been ordered to close to prevent further transmission. The civil war, which erupted on April 15, 2023, involves two main factions: the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under Hemedti, along with three smaller groups.

Fighting has been concentrated in and around the capital, Khartoum, and the Darfur region, resulting in over 7.7 millioninternally displaced individuals and more than 2.1 million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries. Reports indicate that as of early September 2024, at least 20,000 people have lost their lives, with 33,000 others injured amid the escalating violence.

As the cholera outbreak unfolds, the humanitarian situation in Sudan grows increasingly critical, necessitating urgent international attention and support.
