89 Arrested for Violating Sanitation Laws in Abia

During the monthly sanitation exercise in Abia, around 89 people were arrested for violating the state’s Environmental Sanitation Law.

The arrests followed a series of environmental offenses, such as improper waste disposal and non-compliance with local cleanliness regulations.

Speaking to the press after the exercise, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, acknowledged the commendable level of compliance but noted that there is still room for improvement.

Ogbonna noted that these actions are part of ongoing efforts to uphold sanitation standards and educate residents on responsible waste management practices, aiming to foster a cleaner, healthier living environment across the state.

The Commissioner also urged Abians not to let the Yuletide celebrations distract them, reminding them to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and avoid littering.

“We must be mindful of the environment and ensure our actions align with the message that cleanliness is essential,” said Philemon.

“As we celebrate, let’s avoid excess in eating and drinking, as Christmas is not an excuse for wastefulness. Overindulgence creates environmental hazards.”

Meanwhile, Smart Ihuoma, Chairman of Umuahia North Council, expressed disappointment over the low level of participation and compliance in the clean-up exercise, particularly among traders and other groups around Isi Gate, Umuahia.

He lamented that despite having a candid discussion with traders and transporters at Isi Gate about the importance of maintaining a clean environment, they have shown little change in their behavior.

Ihuoma announced that starting next Monday, the law prohibiting trading in unauthorized areas would be strictly enforced.

“Unfortunately, Nigerians often need to be compelled to do what they should,” he remarked.

“We already have a law that bans trading in unauthorized locations and neglecting environmental cleanliness, and this law will be fully enforced beginning Monday”, he added.

He stated that they are prepared to take necessary actions, even if it means stepping on toes, to ensure orderliness around the busy gate area.

“There must be discipline, and we won’t hesitate to act if needed”, Ihuoma highlighted.

In addition, Mrs. Esther Ajah, the Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Climate Change and Sustainability, urged Abians to avoid activities that violate environmental regulations.

She emphasized that for Abia to progress, everyone must play their part in adhering to environmental laws.
