The Kwara State High Court has sentenced five individuals involved in the notorious 2018 Offa robbery to death by hanging. The verdict was delivered on Thursday afternoon after Justice Haleemah Salman ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven its case against the defendants.
The suspects—Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, Salahudeen Azeez, and Niyi Ogundiran—were convicted of illegal possession of firearms, armed robbery, and culpable homicide, six years after the deadly attack that shook Offa, Kwara State.
In April 2018, armed robbers launched a brutal attack on Offa, raiding five commercial banks and killing multiple people, including nine police officers. The robbers also made away with an undisclosed sum of money.
Justice Salman ruled that the crimes committed by the accused are punishable by death, sealing their fate in one of Nigeria's most high-profile robbery cases.
This verdict brings a close to the long-running legal battle following the tragic incident that left the community of Offa devastated.
