Abia PDP chieftain, Mr. John Okiyi Kalu alleged that those who defected to the Labour Party (LP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) did so to shield themselves from corruption, citing their lack of integrity and selfish motives as reasons for leaving the People's Democratic Party (PDP).
Kalu asserted in an interview with journalist that individuals who switched from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party have questionable integrity, driven by a desire for protection or power.
The former Commissioner for Information in Abia State dismissed allegations of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) failing in the state. He cited the party’s representation of 12 members in the House of Assembly as evidence of its continued strength and influence in the region, countering claims about its performance and presence in local governance.
He specifically highlighted the Abia state Governor, Dr Alex Otti who was also a former member of the PDP, as one of the individuals who left the party after he was unable to secure a ticket in 2015. Kalu's remarked that Otti's departure was motivated by personal ambition rather than loyalty to the party.
He asserted that the PDP is now “born again,” consisting solely of members with strong integrity and nothing to conceal. He criticized defectors, including Adolphus, who allegedly campaigned against PDP candidates while accepting funds from the governor to celebrate his birthday.
Kalu further claimed that the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) Chairman, Professor George Chima served as the coordinator for Dr. Alex Otti's campaign at ABSU, insisting that they remain undeterred by this, as they are confident in their capacity to dominate the forthcoming November 2 Local Government Elections.
As he looks toward 2027, Kalu voiced optimism about the PDP's revival, highlighting its strong presence and structures within every Abia family. He urged the Labour Party, under Governor Otti, to demonstrate its dedication to integrity, considering its leader’s past defections.
He also noted that the Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who has consistently advocated against election rigging and result manipulation, should ensure that the upcoming Local Government elections in Abia State are held fairly and without interference.
