Diri Vows to Build a Better Bayelsa

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reaffirmed his commitment to leaving behind a better state and society, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to peace, unity, and development.

Diri made this statement on Wednesday during a memorial service in honour of his late father, Pa Abraham Joseph Michael Diri, at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.Pa Diri, a retired headmaster, lay reader in the Anglican Church, and a man known for his humility, passed away on February 12, 2023, at the age of 88.

Governor Diri speaking at the memorial service reflected on his father’s values, saying they continue to inspire him in governance and personal life. He pledged to uphold the virtues instilled in him, ensuring that he leaves a better society for future generations.

He said “We went to school in mud houses, but today, we are handing over something better to our children. They will, in turn, hand over something even better to their children. Society will continue to grow, but it does not grow in one day,”

Meanwhile, the governor called on Bayelsans, especially politicians, to foster love and unity rather than engage in divisive actions that could destabilize the state. He urged young people to resist being lured into cultism, emphasizing that true belonging comes from being part of God's group rather than secret societies.

"If there is no peace, there will be no development. Our people should love one another. If the state is constantly divided, it will drive everyone away—even our own citizens will hesitate to return home. Let us not pull one another down; instead, let us support each other, and Bayelsa will be better for it," he stated.

The governor explained that the first memorial service for his father could not be held last year as it coincided with his second-term inauguration. He expressed gratitude to the church, political associates, and well-wishers for attending the service.

The Bishop of the Northern Izon Diocese of the Anglican Church, Rt. Rev. Funkuro Amgbare, who delivered the sermon described the late Pa Diri as a man who left a legacy of hospitality, unity, and peace. He encouraged the congregation to emulate these values to build a better society.

The memorial service featured prayers, thanksgiving, and a song rendition by the late Diri’s children, led by Governor Diri himself. The event culminated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Pa Diri’s tomb.

Dignitaries at the service included members of the House of Representatives from Bayelsa, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, other state lawmakers, top government officials, traditional rulers led by King Bubaraye Dakolo, the president of the Ijaw National Congress, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, and state security service commanders.
