Don’t Forget Sacrifices of Fallen heroes, Diri Urges Nigerians

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has beckoned  on Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the Nation’s fallen heroes by fostering a country rooted in justice, equity, and peace.

Diri, who spoke at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at Peace Park, Yenagoa, emphasized the need for collective action to build a Nigeria worthy of the ultimate sacrifices made by its heroes.

During his address, the governor paid heartfelt tribute to the bravery and selflessness of the country’s slain soldiers, urging Nigerians to move beyond ceremonial gestures and commit to creating a better society reflective of their sacrifices.

“As we gather annually to remember our heroes, it is imperative to go beyond mere rituals. These individuals gave their lives so others might live. Their legacy calls for a Nigeria where justice, equity, and prosperity are not abstract ideals but tangible realities,” Diri stated.

He stressed the importance of enacting policies that promote unity, justice, and peace while addressing the needs of all Nigerians. “Every decision we make should foster development, enhance the welfare of every citizen, and build a stronger, more united nation,” the governor added.

The Governor while highlighting the irony of war, noted that those who fought to secure peace often paid the ultimate price. He lauded their courage and sacrifice, acknowledging how their actions continue to inspire generations and shape Nigeria’s history.

To the families of fallen heroes, the governor pledged unwavering support from his administration, acknowledging their shared burden. He expressed gratitude to the state’s security agencies for their role in maintaining peace and assured them of the government’s continued assistance to ensure effective performance.

“The maintenance of law and order remains a cornerstone of our administration. It provides the foundation for building a thriving society conducive to economic growth, social development, and individual well-being,” Diri affirmed.

The ceremony concluded with the symbolic laying of wreaths at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Those who also participated in the event were Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, Bayelsa State Chief Judge Justice Matilda Ayemieye, traditional rulers, military service commanders, and Mrs. Esther Femowei, a widow of a fallen hero.
