Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State is standing by his strong comment, saying the upcoming election is a "do or die" situation, expressing concern about the safety of Nigeria’s democracy and the troubling happenings that has been going on lately.
Governor Obaseki highlighted that a former governor of Edo State, who no longer holds office, seems to have more security than a current sitting governor.
He mentioned that this ex-governor’s house is guarded by more security personnel and even two Armoured personnel Carrier vehicles (APC), which are meant for heavy security operations. Obaseki also raised concerns about the former governor, campaigning for an opposition party, and using police helicopters for his political activities.
Additionally, the governor claimed that police officers in the state are being used to intimidate political opponents. He warned that these unfair practices could hurt the election process and the country’s future.
One Pedro Obaseki, a lecturer and member of the PDP in Edo State recently shared his experience while passing through the area around former Governor Adams Oshiomhole's house in Benin City.
In a recent video shared, Obaseki described seeing a heavy police presence in the Okoro Otun area, where Oshiomhole's home is located. He said he saw two armored tanks stationed on either side of the house, along with about 30 police vehicles. Thereby creating a tensed atmosphere. This heavy police presence has led to road blockages, causing traffic delays for many, including Obaseki himself.
In Pedro’s words; “I am saying as we so speak, as at 7:30 p.m I was in front of Oshiomhole's house in Okoro Otun, I have to pass his house to get to the studio here, I saw two armoured tanks on each side of his house and about 30 police vehicles. There is no thoroughfare right there now. I think that is just to create the fear factor, but Edo people are not afraid”.
Its been heard that local residents are worried about the reasons for the high level security. Obaseki suggested it could be an attempt to instill fear in the community, but he believes the people of Edo will not be intimidated by such measures.
