Edo Election 2024:Prioritize Safety, Group Tells Journalists

The International Press Centre (IPC) has sounded a warning to journalists covering the upcoming Edo governorship election, slated for September 21, to prioritize their safety amid growing concerns over attacks on media professionals during elections.

In a statement released today, IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade cautioned journalists to be vigilant, citing a consistent trend of attacks on journalists during election periods through Melody Akinjiyan, the press Freedom Officer. Arogundade emphasized that the safety of journalists is paramount, especially considering their critical role in ensuring the credibility of the electoral process.

The IPC boss also appealed to the Inspector General of Police to instruct officers to protect accredited journalists, emphasizing that their safety is crucial for the success of the election.

"We call on security operatives and stakeholders to ensure the safety of journalists, who play a vital role in promoting transparency and accountability in the electoral process," Arogundade stressed.

Arogundade further advised journalists to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety while covering the election. "Journalists should be aware of their surroundings, avoid potentially dangerous situations, and utilize available safety resources and support systems," he added.

“It is very important for journalists covering the Edo election to be safety conscious in the discharge of their duties, and to avoid situations that will put them in danger.

“Journalists are expected to take into consideration some safety measures while on the field,” the executive director said.

The IPC has taken proactive steps to promote credible election reportage, organizing training sessions for Edo-based journalists. The centre will also monitor journalist safety during the election through its Centre for Safety and Protection of Journalists.

Arogundade emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, particularly security agencies, to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful governorship election. "All stakeholders must conduct their duties professionally and respectfully, recognizing the critical role journalists play in upholding the integrity of the electoral process," he concluded.

Recall that Niger Delta Connect had earlier reported that security forces deployed personnels in the Edo election, “Edo State as the first batch of security personnel, including police officers, soldiers, and officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), arrive ahead of Saturday's governorship election”.
