Enioluwa Defends Funke Akindele Against Comparison To Taraji

Nigerian influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa has taken a firm stand against the frequent comparison between Nollywood star Funke Akindele and American actress Taraji P. Henson.

In a post on his Instagram page, Enioluwa expressed his disapproval of people referring to Funke Akindele as the “Nigerian version” of Taraji. While acknowledging his admiration for the Hollywood actress, he criticized the tendency of Nigerians to measure their own icons against Western celebrities as a form of validation.

“I really don’t like seeing comments calling Aunty Funke the ‘Nigerian version’ of Taraji P. Henson,”he wrote. As much as I love Taraji and admire her work, I don’t understand the constant need to compare our icons to Western figures. Funke Akindele is ‘The Funke Akindele an unstoppable box office record breaker. She’s not a version of anyone but herself.”

The comparison between Akindele and Henson is not a new debate among fans. Their similarities in versatility and on-screen presence have often sparked discussions online. However, Funke Akindele has consistently proven to be a dominant force in Nollywood, setting records and breaking barriers in the industry.

While declaring love for the American actress, the influencer and model took to his micro-blogging X app to express dissatisfaction with Nigerians who compare their icons to Western figures for validation.

Akindele remains the reigning queen of the Nigerian box office, with several of her films achieving record-breaking success. Some of her biggest hits include Everybody Loves Jenifa, A Tribe Called Judah, Battle on Buka Street, and Omo Ghetto: The Saga, all of which hold the title of highest-grossing films in Nigeria and West Africa.

Beyond her box office triumphs, Akindele has openly shared the struggles she faced before achieving success. In a heartfelt video last year, she reflected on her journey while working on the set of A Tribe Called Judah, a billion-naira-grossing film. She described herself as a living testimony of perseverance, emphasizing that her challenges only made her stronger and more determined to inspire others.

With her undeniable impact on Nollywood and beyond, Funke Akindele continues to solidify her legacy, not as a version of anyone else, but as a trailblazer in her own right.
