The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to position Nigeria as Africa’s number one in the creative industry.
The Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, made this known in Abuja on Monday, during the diplomatic and international development partners’ forum held at the United Nations House.
The minister, also used the opportunity to unveil the plans and initiatives put in place by the ministry to further position the creative industry in Nigeria as Africa's capital, pointing out that the creative sector is on its way to becoming the “new oil", stressing that not every Nigerian will work in the oil sector, therefore, attention and focus should also be channeled towards the creative industry.
In the statement, the minister said : "I do say something that not every Nigerian has the capacity to work in the oil sector but every Nigerian has that creative spirit and that is why we say the creative sector is the new oil.”
The minister further disclosed that the ministry has implemented “The 8 Point Plan” to cultivate growth, innovation, and sustainability across creative sectors, focusing on skill development, policy reform, cultural heritage preservation, and partnerships, while calling on all Nigerians with artistic skills and gifted hands to engage in the ongoing movement of the Federal Government in supporting the creative industry.
The statement reads in part: "The ministry’s vision is to position Nigeria as Africa’s creative capital, stimulating economic growth through creative industries. It invites artistes, stakeholders, and policy makers to join in this transformative endeavour, creating an enabling environment for creativity to flourish, leading to sustainable development and job creation.”
The minister also encouraged Nigerians to embrace opportunities in the creative industry in order to showcase Nigeria’s unique artistic talent to the world, thereby enhancing commitment to driving growth in the creative economy for generations to come and to chart another path for revenue generation, which will also in turn improve on the country's economy for the betterment of all.
The Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy is one of the new ministries established by the President Bola Tinubu administration, which is tailored towards boosting the creative economy.
