Girl Charged With Murder After Suffocating Cousin

A 12-year-old girl in Tennessee has been charged with murder after she suffocated her cousin as the younger girl slept.

The tragic incident was said to have occurred in Humboldt, Tennessee, on July 15, resulting to the arrest of the 12-year-old by officials.

According to Gibson District Attorney Frederick Agee, the older girl suffocated her cousin while she slept in the top bunk of their shared bedroom. A security camera captured the horrific act, showing the older child using bedding to suffocate her cousin.

After the girl's death, the juvenile suspect attempted to cover her tracks by cleaning up the crime scene and repositioning the victim's body.It was gathered that the girls had been staying with their grandmother after traveling from out of town, and a relative reported that they had been arguing over an iPhone prior to the incident.

The victim’s mother, Rayana Smith, confirmed that the issue between the girls came from an argument about an iPhone, according to Fox affiliate WXN.

The US Sun reports that Smith shared emotional words as she remembered her daughter.

“She liked to read books, go swimming, play outside, ride her bike every day, play with the kids in the neighborhood, play with my friends’ kids,” she said.

“My baby was sweet.”

“She did nothing to deserve for her life to be taken,” the mother added.

“She was only 8 years old. She just turned 8 in April.”

gee said under the state’s current laws the suspect, if convicted, would be free from further detention when they turn 19 years old.

The victim's mother has created a GoFundMe  for her daughter's funeral service.

"I never imagined anything like this would happen and now find myself trying to fund a funeral," she wrote on the page.

The 12-year-old girl has been charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. District Attorney Agee described the act as "one of the most disturbing violent acts" his office has prosecuted, and he intends to petition the court to try the girl as an adult. This would enable a lengthier sentence, potentially involving incarceration or supervision with court-ordered conditions.

The case is deeply troubling, and the community is grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence. The girls' ages and their relationship as cousins make the incident all the more heart-wrenching.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus will be on ensuring justice and support for the victim's family, while also addressing the complex needs of the young suspect.

District Attorney General Agee added that his office could no longer comment on the case due to a gag order issued by the courts, according to CBS affiliate WREG.

According to him, neither the victim nor the suspect were from Humboldt.

Agee wrote in the statement that he would petition a judge to prosecute the girl, who turns 13 later this month, in adult court, which would allow for “a lengthier sentence, whether that will be through incarceration or supervision with court-ordered conditions.”

The US Sun further reported that The Court Clerk also could not comment on the case as it involved a juvenile under 14 years old. The 12-year-old's parents could not be reached for comment and questions.
