In a stirring tribute to one of Nigeria’s journalism pioneers, Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, announced the establishment of an annual Ernest Ikoli Media Public Lecture, set to commence in 2025. The announcement came as the highlight of a grand banquet hosted in Yenagoa, which marked the conclusion of the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ (NGE) three-day conference. Governor Diri’s remarks reflected not only his admiration for the legendary journalist but also his commitment to upholding the legacy of Bayelsa-born Ernest Sesei Ikoli, who was the first editor of the iconic Daily Times of Nigeria and a trailblazer in Nigerian media.
Speaking passionately to the distinguished gathering, Governor Diri emphasized the importance of preserving and celebrating Ikoli’s contributions to Nigerian journalism. Ikoli, a Bayelsan who paved the way for generations of journalists, is remembered for his fearless and dedicated approach to reporting, and his impact on media has only grown in significance over the decades. “The annual public lecture in honour of our own, Ernest Sesei Ikoli, will be in partnership with the Nigerian Guild of Editors,” Governor Diri announced, to widespread applause from attendees. He directed the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, along with his media aides, to work out all necessary arrangements for the inaugural lecture in 2025.
This newly instituted public lecture is the second major tribute the Bayelsa State government has bestowed upon Ikoli’s memory. Years prior, the state had named its prominent Media Complex after the journalist, enshrining his name within Bayelsa’s own media landscape. With this new annual lecture, the government aims to foster a space where current and future journalists, editors, and media professionals can gather to discuss issues impacting Nigeria’s media and democracy.
In an additional moment of recognition during the event, the NGE presented an honorary award to Governor Diri, acknowledging his support for the Guild and his commitment to journalism in Bayelsa. Governor Diri used the moment to call for an ongoing, mutually beneficial relationship between the state and the Nigerian Guild of Editors. “Your visit to some of the Prosperity Projects across the State speaks volumes. We will continue to work with the Guild to strengthen our media and to ensure that Bayelsa’s stories reach the nation and the world,” he affirmed.
