Gov Fubara Tasks Youths On Knowledge Application For National Growth

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, stood before a proud gathering at the 4th Convocation Ceremony of the PAMO University of Medical Sciences (PUMS) in Port Harcourt, delivering a powerful message to Nigerian youths and medical graduands. The governor’s words resonated deeply, urging them to harness their specialized skills, pursue professional excellence, and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development despite the challenging times.

Held on Friday, November 15, 2024, the event was a celebration of hard work, determination, and the pursuit of excellence, marking another milestone for PAMO University, the first private medical institution in Nigeria. Governor Fubara’s remarks were especially significant, considering the pressing issues of economic hardship, unemployment, and the youth’s growing sense of disillusionment with the state of affairs in the country.

Addressing the fresh graduates, Fubara emphasized the importance of using their medical knowledge and skills to not only secure a decent livelihood but also to transform the healthcare sector and contribute to the nation’s progress. "As youths, your future and the future of our country are in your hands; a better future is possible with hard work, focus, and unwavering commitment to achieving set goals and transformational ambitions," he said, delivering a call to action that would echo far beyond the ceremony.

The governor acknowledged the myriad challenges young Nigerians face, from economic instability and skyrocketing inflation to a lack of job opportunities. Yet, he urged them not to be disheartened, stressing that while these obstacles are real, they must be met with resilience, determination, and an unwavering belief that success is within their reach.

“It is crucial to build networks rooted in your values and purpose,” Fubara advised, “and to volunteer your skills with integrity, advancing the greater good of all, regardless of class, creed, or background.” This message of selfless service was not just an appeal for personal growth, but also a plea for unity and collective progress in a country beset by deep divisions.

While delivering his address, Governor Fubara also took time to commend PAMO University for its vision of providing world-class medical education. He expressed admiration for the strides the institution has made in a relatively short period, despite the challenges in the educational sector. Under the leadership of its founder, Sir Dr. Peter Odili, the university has quickly established itself as a beacon of excellence in medical education, producing highly skilled professionals who are ready to serve Nigeria and the world.

"I admire PUMS for several reasons," Fubara said, "It is the first private medical university established by an illustrious son of our State, Sir Dr. Peter Odili, who has dedicated much of his life to public service and the welfare of humanity. In an era when educational standards are often on the decline, PUMS stands as a rare gem—a true island of excellence."

The governor took pride in the fact that Nigerian children now have expanded opportunities to pursue medical and health sciences education without having to travel abroad. "Our children now have the chance to acquire the professional skills needed to serve their communities and change the world," he declared, alluding to the wider impact PUMS is poised to have on the healthcare system.

In an emotional moment, Fubara expressed his gratitude for the honorary Doctor of Science degree conferred upon him by the university. He noted that the honor was not just a recognition of his leadership but also of the collective efforts of Rivers State to overcome years of stagnation and underdevelopment. “This honor reflects the determination of Rivers people to break free from the chains of fear, poverty, and lack of progress that have plagued us for too long,” he said, his words echoing the aspirations of a state on the brink of transformation.

The ceremony took a special turn when the Chancellor of PUMS, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), congratulated Governor Fubara for his contribution to the university and accepted the honorary doctorate conferred on him. In a show of respect and admiration, a new lecture theatre was named in honor of Governor Fubara, cementing his legacy at the institution.

The retired general’s address emphasized the resilience of the graduating students, noting that the event was a testament to their dedication and the university's commitment to producing high-level professionals in health and medical sciences. "The journey to this moment has been filled with challenges, but your resilience has proven that you are more than ready to take on the world," General Abubakar said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Odili, the visionary founder and Pro-Chancellor of PUMS, also took time to praise Governor Fubara for his outstanding leadership in advancing the healthcare sector in Rivers State. Despite the many distractions that have marked his first year in office, Dr. Odili noted that Fubara had remained focused on his mandate to improve the lives of Rivers people. His ability to deliver tangible results, particularly in the healthcare sector, has earned him the admiration of both the university and the people of the state.

"We thank you for standing firm on the oath of office you took and for prioritizing the welfare of the people," Dr. Odili said, before announcing a significant development: all 223 graduates at the ceremony would be granted automatic employment through the Rivers State Ministry of Health. The gesture was met with applause, as it underscored the governor's commitment to ensuring that the state’s newly minted medical professionals have the opportunity to contribute directly to the improvement of healthcare services in the state.

Governor Fubara's speech also reinforced his administration’s dedication to transforming the healthcare sector in Rivers State. He reiterated that his government would continue to work in close partnership with institutions like PUMS to improve the healthcare delivery system for the benefit of all Nigerians.

“We are committed to improving the healthcare sector and ensuring that all Nigerians have access to quality, affordable medical care,” Fubara said. He vowed that his administration would remain focused on its goal to transform the state’s infrastructure, healthcare system, and overall standard of living, despite the many challenges facing the nation.

The governor’s comments underscored a broader vision for the future of Rivers State—a vision of peace, security, prosperity, and a society that thrives on the responsible management of its resources. "Our goal is to transform Rivers State into a place where everyone can enjoy the highest standards of living and access to essential services," he concluded.
