Gunmen Abduct Rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary in Edo

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has confirmed the abduction of Reverend Father Thomas Oyode, Rector of the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, Ivhianokpodi, located in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State. The diocese reported that an official complaint has been lodged, seeking assistance from law enforcement agencies to ensure Father Oyode's safe release.

In a press release issued on Monday by the Director of Communications of the diocese, Reverend Father Peter Egielewa, it was disclosed that the attack occurred during the seminary’s evening prayers and benediction. ''The incident took place on Sunday around 7 PM, when armed assailants stormed the seminary and forcefully abducted the rector, leading him into the surrounding bush.''

''The attackers targeted the seminary during its evening service, a time when both priests and seminarians were in prayer. Father Oyode was singled out and taken away by the gunmen. Fortunately, all other clergy and seminarians, including the vice-rector, have been accounted for.''

In response to the security breach, the diocese relocated the seminarians to a safer location to ensure their well-being.

At the time of the report, the diocese has not received any communication or demands from the abductors, leaving Father Oyode’s fate uncertain. The situation has drawn concern from the Catholic community and other sympathizers across the region, who have called for swift action from the authorities to secure his release.

The Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, where the attack occurred, was founded in 2006 by the Catholic Bishop of Auchi, Most Reverend Gabriel Dunia. The institution has played a significant role in the training of future priests within the diocese and beyond. Over the years, it has produced more than 500 graduates who have gone on to serve in various capacities within the church.

In light of the abduction, the Catholic Diocese of Auchi urged the public to remain prayerful for Father Oyode's safe return and for the protection of all those associated with the seminary. The church also emphasized its commitment to working closely with law enforcement to resolve the situation and ensure justice is served.

The incident highlights the increasing insecurity in parts of Edo State, where kidnapping has become a growing concern. Meanwhile, authorities are expected to intensify efforts to track down the kidnappers and ensure that Father Oyode is returned unharmed.
