One person is feared dead, and several others injured on Thursday when some gunmen attacked the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu in Benin City, the state capital.
The victim, a policeman, was said to be attached to the All Progressives Congress (APC), governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebolo.
Three other police officers also attached to the APC candidate were said to be seriously injured.
Okpebolo and other dignitaries were part of the crowd that went to the Benin Airport to welcome Shaibu back from Abuja after the Federal High Court on Wednesday overruled his impeachment by the state House of Assembly.
The suspected assassination attack was said to have happened at the Airport exit gate roundabout, near Faith Mediplex in Benin, when the motorcade of Okpebolo and Shaibu were leaving the airport.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on their convoy, which made their supporters scamper for safety for fear of being hit by stray bullets.
Our correspondent learnt that it took the efforts and intervention of security personnel to repel the gunmen and bring the situation under control.
