Musawa Addresses NYSC Certificate Controversy

Hannatu Musawa, Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, has responded to the ongoing controversy surrounding her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) status, firmly denying any wrongdoing.

Speaking during a televised interview yesterday Musawa was questioned about her appointment as a minister despite lacking an NYSC certificate, a mandatory requirement for public office holders. In response, she stated that the matter had already been “adjudicated” and promised to eventually provide a comprehensive account of what transpired.

Musawa emphasized that she had adhered to the law, noting that she had completed her national youth service program. “There have been so many different accounts of that particular situation. The fact that I’m seated here, should tell you that I did not do anything wrong,” she said.

While she acknowledged the public’s concern, Musawa refrained from going into further detail, adding that social media had circulated various misleading narratives. She maintained that everything she did was lawful, assuring Nigerians that she broke no rules.

The controversy traces back to her 2023 ministerial screening, during which she was unable to produce proof of completing the NYSC scheme. This led to legal action from some Nigerians, who argued that her appointment without an NYSC certificate was a violation of the law. However, in April 2024, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the case, ruling that the plaintiffs lacked the legal standing to sue.

Despite the ongoing debate, Musawa remains focused on her role, dismissing concerns about her position being at risk. When asked if she feared being dropped from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet due to the controversy, she expressed confidence in the President's judgment.

“I don’t think there is a controversy about my person or my office," Musawa said. "What I know of the President is that he has a vision and mission to improve Nigeria, and as a leader, he makes courageous decisions. I trust his judgment fully.”

In recent weeks, there have been calls for a cabinet reshuffle, with critics urging the President to remove underperforming ministers. However, no official date has been set for any changes. Musawa, for her part, remains confident that any adjustments made by the President will be in the best interest of the country’s progress.
