The Imo Hoteliers Association has appealed for tax rebate to stop further closure and relocation of hotels to other states in the country.
Chairman of the association, Mr. Chima Chukwunyere made the appeal at a meeting with the Acting Chairman of Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), Mr. Justice Okoye in his office in Owerri, the state capital.

Chukwunyere said that such appeal became necessary because of the current situation in the state which is adversely affecting the hotel industry.
He said; "Already many hoteliers are on the run, some have sold theirs and have gone to establish hotels in the neighbouring states and cities such as Asaba in Delta State".
According to him, many more have placed their hotels on lease while some that are yet to be lease out, covers it with sink on the pretense that there is renovation going on.
The Chairman of the association reminded the IIRS boss of the need to review the current charge in the harmonized demand notice, with a view to cutting it for easy compliance by hotels.
He stated that the Abia state currently collects N105,000 while Delta State collects between N120,000 and N150,000 as against N700,000 and N800,000 being charged by Imo State.
While expressing their appreciation to the Acting Chairman of IIRS, for his robust and long standing relationship with the association in the state especially during his first tenure in the state, Chukwunyere pledged the commitment of the association to ensure his success during his second tenure.
Chukwunyere assured the IIRS Acting Chairman that the association will make sure that hotels that did not comply with the 2021-2022 harmonized demand notice clear their debt immediately.
The association reminded Governor Hope Uzodimma of the promise he made to hold a meeting with members of hoteliers association in the state.
On their meeting with the Deputy Managing Director of Eastern Waste Management Company Ltd, Chukwunyere disclosed that it was fruitful with fair agreement reached by both parties.
The chairman disclosed that his members will withdraw all cases in the court as soon as the agreement is sealed.
In his remarks, a member of the association Prof. Bethram Ozumba harped on the need for partnership among two parties that would engender a healthy environment for hotel business to thrive in the state.
Responding, the State Acting Chairman of Imo State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Justice Okoye assured to take the demands of the hoteliers association to the appropriate quarters for action.
While commending them for the long standing relationship between them, Okoye assured of stronger partnership that would foster a continuous mutually beneficial relationship with government.
