Ikwerre Delegation Seeks Inclusion in NDDC Development Plans

In a historic first, a delegation from Ogbakor Ikwerre, representing the largest ethnic group in Rivers State, visited the headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to discuss pressing issues of inclusion and development. Led by Sir Barr. Godspower Onuekwa, the group met with the Commission’s Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, to advocate for greater involvement of Ikwerre youths and communities in NDDC initiatives.

During the visit, Onuekwa presented a comprehensive list of the community’s needs, expressing frustration over what he described as systemic neglect. “Despite our size and contribution to the state, the Ikwerre people have often been overlooked in key developmental programs,” he lamented. The proposals submitted aim to address infrastructural gaps, economic opportunities, and educational support, with a focus on fostering long-term growth within the region.

Responding to the delegation, Dr. Ogbuku outlined the NDDC's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable development across the Niger Delta. He emphasized the Commission’s commitment to youth empowerment through initiatives like Project Hope, which creates platforms for skill acquisition and community engagement. Another key program, the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, seeks to integrate young people into the region’s economic fabric by supporting entrepreneurship and trade.

Education, a cornerstone of the NDDC’s vision, also took center stage in Dr. Ogbuku’s address. He announced plans for 800 scholarships in the coming year, with 200 slots for international postgraduate studies and 600 for local institutions. “We want to ensure that no young person is held back from pursuing their dreams due to financial constraints,” he remarked.

Dr. Ogbuku further stressed the importance of collaboration with grassroots communities, noting that real development stems from understanding and addressing local needs. “Partnerships like this are crucial. The NDDC is not just about executing projects but about empowering the people who live here to take charge of their future,” he said.

The visit has sparked optimism among Ikwerre leaders, who view it as a potential turning point in their relationship with the Commission. As discussions progress, the Ikwerre people hope to see tangible outcomes that will not only benefit their communities but also set a new standard for equitable development in the Niger Delta.
