In a dramatic escalation of political tension in Rivers State, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Tony Okocha, has issued a stern ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding his resignation within 48 hours. Failure to do so, Okocha warned, would lead to impeachment proceedings.
Chief Okocha made this bold declaration on Monday during a press briefing at his private residence in Port Harcourt, the state's capital. The APC leader accused Governor Fubara of gross disrespect towards President Bola Tinubu, citing the governor's mishandling of the ongoing political crisis in the state as the primary reason for his demand.
According to Okocha, Governor Fubara has consistently ignored the peace initiatives spearheaded by President Tinubu aimed at resolving Rivers State’s political conflicts. He suggested that the governor's actions have made it impossible for the APC to continue tolerating what he termed “insubordination” towards the president.
“As a political party, we are giving Governor Fubara two clear options: either he resigns honourably or faces impeachment. That is the unequivocal stance of the APC in Rivers State,” Okocha stated firmly.
The APC leader went on to express his dissatisfaction with the governor's alleged disregard for Tinubu’s authority, stating, “He has blatantly disrespected Mr. President, and we cannot stand by and allow this to continue. The offences committed by the governor are glaring, and even the Supreme Court has acknowledged them, providing further evidence of his misdeeds.”
In a move that signals the gravity of the situation, Okocha also made it clear that there would be no need for the Rivers State House of Assembly to conduct any further investigations into the matter. According to him, all the necessary evidence is already on the table.
“The House of Assembly does not need to set up any committee to investigate the governor any further,” he asserted. “The Supreme Court has already provided us with the evidence we need.”
Okocha's ultimatum comes just days after the Rivers State House of Assembly gave Governor Fubara a separate 48-hour deadline to submit the 2025 budget, further intensifying the political heat surrounding the governor.
